Chicago Sex Offenders

Chicago has one of the most detailed sex offender tracking systems of any city in Illinois. The Chicago Police Department runs its own sex offender database in addition to the statewide registry kept by the Illinois State Police. With more than 2.7 million people in the city, Chicago tracks a large number of registered sex offenders across its 77 community areas. You can search for sex offenders in Chicago by name, address, or zip code through several free tools. The CPD also offers a map-based search called CLEARMAP that shows offender locations in real time across the city.

Chicago Police Sex Offender Database

The Chicago Police Department keeps its own sex offender database. This is separate from the state registry. It pulls data from CPD records and gets updated every day. You can search it at no cost from any device with web access. The search tool is mobile-friendly, so you can check it from your phone while out in the city.

To use the CPD sex offender search, go to the Chicago Police sex offender database page. You can look up sex offenders in Chicago by name or by address. The results show the person's name, photo, home address, and the offense they were convicted of. Each listing also shows the date of the conviction and the registration status. The database covers all sex offenders who live in Chicago or have registered a Chicago address with the police department. If someone moves into the city and has a prior sex offense, they must register with CPD within three days under 730 ILCS 150, the Sex Offender Registration Act. That means the database stays current with new arrivals as well as long-term Chicago residents on the registry.

The Chicago Police Department sex offender database page lets you search for offenders across the city and view key details about each person on the list.

Chicago CLEARMAP Sex Offenders

CLEARMAP is a mapping tool from CPD. It shows where sex offenders live on an interactive map of Chicago. You can zoom into any neighborhood, community area, or block to see dots that mark each offender's address. Click on a dot and you get basic info about that sex offender in Chicago. This is useful if you want to see how many sex offenders live near a specific location like a school, park, or your own home.

The CLEARMAP sex offenders web app works in any browser. You don't need to download anything or make an account. The map updates along with the main CPD database, so what you see is close to real-time data for Chicago sex offenders. You can search by address to center the map on a spot that matters to you, then see which registered sex offenders live within a set radius. The tool also lets you layer in other crime data from CPD, which gives a fuller picture of safety in a given Chicago neighborhood.

The CLEARMAP tool shows a map view of registered sex offenders across Chicago neighborhoods, letting you search by address or zoom into specific areas.

Sex Offender Registration in Chicago

Sex offenders who live in Chicago must register in person at a Chicago Police District station. The main registration office is at CPD headquarters at 3510 S. Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60653. You can also call 311 for non-emergency questions about sex offender registration in the city. The registration process follows state law under 730 ILCS 150, but CPD handles the local side of it for anyone with a Chicago address.

When a sex offender moves to Chicago, they have to register within three days. That is a hard deadline set by state law. If they change their address within the city, they must update it within three days too. Annual verification is also required. Every year, the offender must go back to the station and confirm that their information is still correct. Some offenders have to verify more often, every 90 days, depending on the type of conviction. Sexual predators in Chicago verify four times a year rather than once. Failing to register or update in time is a new felony charge under Illinois law.

The City of Chicago also has rules about where sex offenders can live. Under city ordinance, sex offenders cannot live within 500 feet of a school, playground, or facility that serves children. Chicago is dense, so these restrictions limit housing options in many parts of the city. The state adds its own buffer zones under 730 ILCS 152, the Child Sex Offender and Murderer Community Notification Law, which bars offenders from loitering near schools and parks.

Illinois State Police Registry for Chicago

Beyond the CPD database, you can also search for Chicago sex offenders on the Illinois State Police sex offender registry. The ISP registry covers the whole state and includes every registered sex offender in Illinois, not just those in Chicago. You search by name, city, county, or zip code. The results show the same kind of info: name, photo, address, offense, and registration details.

The ISP registry is the official statewide list. It gets data from all local agencies, including CPD. So a sex offender in Chicago will show up on both the CPD database and the ISP registry. The state site is good if you want to search across city lines or check if someone from Chicago has moved to another part of Illinois. You can also sign up for alerts through OffenderWatch, a network used by many Illinois sheriff offices and police departments. It sends email updates when a sex offender moves into or out of a given area.

The Chicago Police Department main page provides links to their sex offender database, CLEARMAP tool, and other public safety resources for the city.

Chicago Sex Offender Notifications

Illinois law requires that communities get told when certain sex offenders move into their area. In Chicago, this falls on CPD. When a sexual predator or child sex offender registers a new address, the police notify schools, day care centers, and other child-serving groups near the address. Residents can also find out on their own by checking the databases listed above.

The Illinois.gov sex offenders page has links to the state registry and explains the notification rules under state law. Community notification in Chicago works the same as the rest of Illinois, but the sheer size of the city means more notifications happen here than anywhere else in the state. If you want to stay informed about sex offenders near your home in Chicago, the best approach is to check the CPD database regularly and sign up for OffenderWatch alerts through your local police district.

Report Sex Offender Violations in Chicago

If you think a sex offender in Chicago is not following the rules, you can report it. Call 311 for non-emergency reports. If there is an immediate threat to safety, call 911. Common violations include living too close to a school, failing to register a new address, or not showing up for annual verification. All of these are crimes under Illinois law, and CPD takes them seriously.

You can also call the Illinois Sex Offender Registration Team, known as I-SORT. Their hotline is 1-888-414-7678 and it runs Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM. I-SORT handles tips and complaints about sex offender violations across the whole state, but they work with CPD on Chicago cases. Reporting a violation helps keep the sex offender registry accurate and keeps communities in Chicago safer.

Note: You do not need to give your name when reporting a sex offender violation in Chicago.
